Awesome museum for local fish and the history of the area. I didn't particularly like the zoo portion they had. The trails we're gorgeous and the planetarium was awesome!
I love what they do there. The people are passionate and caring. The shows and education are great and really help to tell the story about old world Florida. They need more help! If you can spare some time, volunteer. You will feel better for it (I sure do.)
I attended the annual hauntedwalk they hold and was very very disappointed. I was in a group of 6 and one of our group members was a tad excessive with complaining about not going in, so they tried splitting our group up which would have been okay. But instead let us all go through. Now it is a 16 and up, but even then i wouldn’t take a 16 year old to it. The “actors” were very vulgar and used foul language throughout the walk. I was under the impression they weren’t allowed to touch you. But several of my group members were touched. One girl even had the audacity to wrap a plastic chain around a girl in my groups neck which I didn’t notice. I was only told at the end. They then chose to separate my girlfriend and I. For an interview and told us that she wouldn’t have to walk through this dark labyrinth thing alone. But then sent her through anyway. It got to the point where I had to physically threaten a man to let me go back through into this pitch black maze to help her find her way out. Overall not worth it.
The most recent time they were found telling people to different things we're in regards to the eclipse glasses. I had called asking if they had eclipse glasses and they told me that they would have them that afternoon. When I asked if I could reserve them or pay ahead I was told no. They suggested that I come in first thing the next morning. When I arrived there were no eclipse glasses available because they had already reserve them for other people. I was highly disappointed because when I asked to reserve them I was told I could not. I guess they just like some people better than others.
I often come to enjoy the wonderful things the nature center has to offer with my family (we even have a family package, to visit more often), however today we came in a group of more than just our family of which two were mentally and physically handicapped, and Heather in the planatarium made our experience horrible. She made comments regarding one handicapped man in our group taking a long time and many more rude comments about people within the other groups... and in my opionion you don't make comments like that when working with the public people or anyone for that matter, I will think twice before going back into the planatarium and hearing her degrade handicapped people or anyone for that matter again.. she was absolutely RUDE!!!
The planetarium and museum are very unreliable. They tell you one thing and then do another. I booked a field trip and they closed during that time. I managed to get them to push their closing in a day later because I'd already booked for the field trip and put it on our schedule. They only did it after I pointed out breach of contract and sent several emails as proof. They asked what movies we requested for the children and I happily filled them out. They didn't play either of the movies and instead played movies that the children found boring because they were over their head. The man and the planetarium droned on and on for over 30 minutes with the children becoming restless.
