I was there as a Redcross volunteer for shelter duty. The arena is amazing for a college arena.
Horrible conditions. Slept on freezing old concrete floor. Bathrooms we're in disgusting shape. The line to eat was over an over to get a snack called breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Dogs barking all night. Roof leak in the storm. But, there was plenty of police presence including the National Guard. Which kept tempers down. I personally didn't see any violence. They best part was we where safe
Florida Gulf Coast University's Alico Arena is a great place to watch men's and women's D-1 basketball. The atmosphere is electric as the fans are excited to watch their teams have winning seasons.
We were here to shelter in evacuation from Hurricaine Erma...place is very nice...1st row bench bleachers and 2nd floor chairs are very hard uncomfortable plastic...bring a cushion
We were evacuated in this place by Hurricane Irma and I want to express our gratitude to all the members of the university, all the security personnel, police, army. We were very well attended, with good conditions, permanent air conditioning, food, water, medical attention, internet, giving permanent attention to the elderly. Congratulations to the staff of Alico Arena, for the students and volunteers who were there to help us always with the best deal, very human. Thank you very very much.
